According to Fire and Emergency NZ, a huge fire broke out at Global Scrap Metal Solutions in Hunua Rd, Papakura, this afternoon and is now under control.
The blaze started at around 4:30, and an HC Post reporter happened upon the scene and captured the video above.
At around 5 pm, an emergency text alert was issued for South Auckland residents to stay indoors.
Fire and Emergency now reports that the fire is under control, though it is not expected to be fully extinguished for a few hours.
Assistant Commander Chris Delfos stated that an excavator is being used to turn over the burning material, allowing firefighters to fully extinguish the flames.
The amount of smoke has significantly decreased, but residents in affected areas are advised to stay indoors with doors and windows closed to minimize exposure.
