Hidden Taonga of the Coromandel – A Treasury Talk with DOC

The next Treasury Talk will explore the unique natural environment of the Coromandel through stories, science, and immersive technology.

Maree Limpus, Community Ranger and Team Leader for the Department of Conservation in Hauraki, will present a short talk on some of the native species that make the Coromandel special. The presentation will highlight the distinctive characteristics and behaviours that set local wildlife apart, drawing on Maree’s passion for conservation and environmental education.

Attendees will also be invited to experience a virtual reality journey back in time into the Coromandel’s kauri forests. The programme offers a rare glimpse into ancient landscapes and has been developed by Waikato Regional Council in partnership with local iwi.

The evening will also feature native geckos, kindly brought along by Jane Ashby. There will be opportunities to ask questions, learn more about these taonga species, and, for those comfortable, possibly hold a gecko.

The event promises an engaging and family-friendly evening celebrating the natural heritage of the Coromandel.

  1. Hello.
I’d love to attend, but I’d have to travel from Coromandel return.
Has it previously been discussed the possibility of talks in different towns?
They’re part of the Coromandel Peninsula and therefore the area of interest .
    Regards,
    David Benjamin.

Hi David – what a great idea – you could approach DOC (as we did) to see if they are interested in putting a talk on in other centres. It would be fantastic if they could!
