Waikato Unicol Blacks 0–1 Thames Men’s Firsts
With just six weeks remaining in the season, Thames Men’s Firsts travelled to Jansen Park and dug deep to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Waikato Unicol Blacks, strengthening their hold on second place.
Thames made a bright start, creating a flurry of early chances. Leading scorer Jake Hudson capitalised on a defensive error and chipped the goalkeeper, only to see his effort skim the crossbar.
Moments later, a mishandled cross fell kindly to Xavier Brown, but his close-range shot was cleared off the line. Thames players appealed for handball, but the referee waved play on.
Hudson was again at the heart of the action, latching onto a long ball before finding Raegen Winslow, who turned his defender brilliantly but poked his shot just wide.
Keegan Apperley then drove a low ball into the area that bounced invitingly for Hudson, whose first-time volley was well saved by Unicol goalkeeper Josh Casbolt. Soon after, slick interplay down the left between Winslow and Apperley again picked out Hudson at the back post. After cutting inside, his shot drifted narrowly wide.
Despite dominating the opening half and creating numerous opportunities, Thames went into the break locked at 0-0.
Fresh legs injected new energy into the visitors after halftime. Darius King and Ryan Danby both tested the defence with long-range efforts before King found space inside the box, only to fire over the bar.
The breakthrough finally arrived midway through the second half. Apperley burst into space down the left and delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Michael Kim, who controlled the ball on his thigh before smashing a powerful half-volley into the far corner to give Thames a deserved 1-0 lead.
Unicol responded with a strong late push, setting up a tense finish, but Thames stood firm thanks largely to another outstanding performance from goalkeeper Mathew Burchell.
Burchell’s defining moment came in the dying seconds when he produced a spectacular one-handed reaction save to tip a close-range effort over the crossbar and preserve all three points.
Captain Mickaël Dernoncourt praised his side’s determination after the match.
“This was a closely contested match against a young Unicol team, but we defended really well and, most importantly, played as a team to get the three points.”
Thames Men’s Firsts return to Rhodes Park next Saturday, July 25, where they will host old rivals Waihi AFC. Kick-off is at 2.30pm.
