Thames Music Group’s next free Friday lunchtime concert will be a special celebration of Matariki, featuring the dynamic youth-led barbershop chorus, Manu Mātātahi. The concert takes place on the Matariki public holiday, Friday 20 June, at 12:15pm at St George’s Church, Thames.

Manu Mātātahi, based in Hamilton, is a passionate group of singers dedicated to revitalising the barbershop style among young people in the Waikato. Formed in early 2022, the chorus is made up of a diverse mix of genders, ages, and backgrounds, united by their shared love for four-part harmony and traditional barbershop performance with a distinctive Aotearoa flavour.

Despite being a relatively new ensemble, Manu Mātātahi has already achieved national recognition, earning bronze medals at the Barbershop Harmony New Zealand national competitions in both 2023 and 2024.

The Thames performance will mark their first Matariki concert in the region and offers a unique opportunity for the local community to enjoy a modern take on an old-school musical genre. Thames Music Group invites residents and visitors to come together in celebration of the Māori New Year, with a concert that reflects the values of unity, renewal, and shared culture.

The event is free to attend, and koha/donations will be gratefully accepted.
