New Two-Lane Bridge Set to Ease Future Tairua Holiday Traffic

There are brighter days ahead for Tairua motorists, with NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) confirming progress on a much-anticipated two-lane replacement for the single-lane Pepe Stream Bridge on State Highway 25 (SH25).

The project has now entered the procurement phase, with construction expected to begin in late 2026.

“The preferred option—developed through our 2022 business case and extensive engagement with iwi and local stakeholders—is a two-lane bridge with an attached shared walking and cycling path,” says Darryl Coalter, Regional Manager Infrastructure Delivery at NZTA. “This will replace the current single-lane bridge and the adjacent pedestrian crossing.”

With funding secured, NZTA will now focus on design and consenting work. Subject to approvals, construction is scheduled to begin late next year, with the goal of opening the new bridge to traffic by Christmas 2027.

NZTA is inviting the Tairua community and SH25 users to a drop-in information session at the Tairua Community Hall on Wednesday 30 April, between 3pm and 6pm.

“We’re keen to continue the conversation with locals, holidaymakers, and businesses about what’s important to them as the project moves forward,” Mr Coalter says.

A design and build contract will be awarded later this year. Keeping SH25 open throughout the construction period is a key consideration in the project’s planning and methodology.

The Pepe Stream Bridge upgrade is part of a wider bridge improvement programme to enhance safety, efficiency, and resilience on the Coromandel Peninsula’s state highway network.

Work is also set to start this year on the Boundary Creek Bridge on the Thames Coast north of Te Mata, while design is underway for a new two-lane Ramarama Stream Bridge north of Whiritoa on SH25.
