New Zealanders are looking to the coast for a winter escape as temperatures drop, and the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty lead the charge. According to new Booking.com search data for King’s Birthday weekend 2025, the region has emerged as one of the most searched destinations in the country, with several local towns climbing rapidly in popularity.
Among those climbing the rankings were Whitianga (+3) and Mount Maunganui (+2). Papamoa saw the most significant leap in domestic searches, jumping four spots to become the fastest-rising coastal destination. Tauranga followed close behind, rising three spots, with search interest nearly doubling compared with last year.
The data highlights Whitianga’s growing appeal beyond the warmer months, suggesting that its mix of coastal charm, boutique shops, and relaxed atmosphere is resonating with off-season travellers.
“Whether it’s the promise of a seaside stroll, relaxed cafés, or simply chasing a bit more daylight, it’s clear that Kiwis are craving coastal calm even in winter,” said a Booking.com spokesperson.
Top six fastest-growing most searched domestic destinations:
- Papamoa (+4 places)
- Tauranga (+3 places, with search interest nearly doubling)
- Lake Tekapo (+3 places, also with close to double the search interest)
- Whitianga (+3 places)
- Martinborough (+3 places)
- Mount Maunganui (+2 places)
