Sky-High Effort: Waihi Team Rises for Blood Cancer Cause

Members of the OceanaGold Waihi Mines Rescue Team took on the Sky Tower challenge in full firefighting gear on 24 May, raising vital funds for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

Their efforts contributed to a national fundraising total of over $1.9 million, alongside more than 1,000 fire and emergency personnel from across the country, including as far south as Bluff.

The Waihi team claimed the top fundraising spot for teams of 5–9 members, while their colleagues at OceanaGold’s Macraes Operation were the highest fundraising team overall. Waihi’s Shay Perkinson placed third nationwide for individual fundraising.

In the climb itself, the Waihi team clocked the second-fastest time, narrowly edging out the Macraes team by just one-tenth of a second. Waihi’s Jenna Powell repeated her impressive result from last year, again placing second in the female 16–39 age category.

Jenna Powell reflected on the emotional significance of the event:

“Everyone climbing the Sky Tower is doing it for someone—someone they’ve lost or someone currently battling illness. You see photos and names of loved ones on people’s gear. It’s a powerful reminder of why we do this.”

Shay Perkinson spoke about the intensity of the day:
“There’s a huge build-up, both physically and mentally. On the day, it’s all adrenaline—once you start climbing, it becomes a test of mental strength as much as physical endurance.”

Perkinson added that the experience leaves a lasting impact:
“Once the climb and awards are over, you reflect. It’s humbling. To be part of something bigger than yourself and know you’ve helped—it’s a special feeling.”

Both Shay and Jennaa extended heartfelt thanks to their sponsors.
“Local individuals, businesses, and corporate supporters made this possible. Their backing was a big part of the event’s success, and we’re grateful to each of them.”

The Sky Tower Challenge continues to unite emergency services around the country in support of those living with blood cancer, and the Waihi and Macraes teams are proud to have played their part.
