Hauraki community rallies to support neighbours affected by January storm

Hauraki residents, small businesses and community organisations have received financial support through the Mayoral Disaster Relief Fund following the January 21 storm, with 21 households and 12 businesses receiving grants. The fund has now closed.

With Government support, Mayor Toby Adams established the fund within days of the state of emergency to help people facing hardship not fully covered by insurance and other assistance.

“The response from our community has been moving,” says Peter Thom, Group Manager Community Development and Regulatory. “People came forward who needed help, while others donated to ensure the fund could go further in supporting neighbours in need. The fund did what it was set up to do, and we’re glad we could be there for people during this difficult time.”

The fund supported Hauraki residents and small businesses, with grants helping cover essential costs including food, accommodation, utilities, debris removal and other storm-related expenses.

The fund received $14,000 from Woolworths and $245 in public donations. Council thanked Woolworths for its significant contribution, along with everyone who donated to support fellow community members.

All applications have now been assessed and funds allocated to those who met the criteria.

Residents who have not yet found the support they need can contact Council on 07 862 8609, freephone 0800 734 834, or email info@hauraki-dc.govt.nz. Council staff can help connect people with other available services.
