Scott Simpson: Reforming RMA priority for Government

Opinion

Consultation is underway for what could be the biggest shake up to national direction under the Resource Management Act in New Zealand history.

National direction refers to the rules that sit behind the RMA that inform how councils develop and implement local plans and rules.

The Government is proposing to amend 12 existing national direction instruments and introduce four new national direction instruments. This is centred around three packages, which will make it easier to farm, easier to build the infrastructure we need, and easier to build granny flats and papakainga.

Reforming the RMA is a priority for the Government and next year we’ll replace it with new legislation premised on property rights. These proposals have been designed to be able to transition to the new RMA system once implemented.

Consultation is open until 27 July 2025 and more information about the proposals can be found online at https://environment.govt.nz/news/consultation-on-updating-rma-national-direction/

In local news, it was great to see some of our residents acknowledged in the King’s Birthday Royal Honours List.

Wayne Wright of Ōmokoroa received a ONZM for Services to Education and Philanthropy, which is fitting recognition for the impact that he has had on so many communities. Wayne’s a serial entrepreneur who’s made a lot of businesses grow and thrive, including BestStart Educare which he co-established with his late wife Chloe. More recently, he’s being doing a lot of development in Paeroa.

Ross Cooper also received a KSM for Services to Rugby, where he has made significant contributions at all levels for more than 50 years. Ross not only was a superb player during his playing days, but he’s also given back to the sport as a coach, selector, administration and promoter. He’s been an All Black selector, Senior Coach for various teams, and currently serves as President of the Thames Valley Rugby Union.

Sincere congratulations to Wayne and Ross for the contributions you have made in your respective fields; both of you exemplify the qualities of hard-work, determination and the willingness to do your bit to make our communities stronger.
