Tairua Buy Local Initiative: Win Prizes While Supporting Local Businesses

The Tairua Business Association (TBA) has launched a new “Buy Local” campaign to help support local businesses during the winter off-season, a period when trade in the picturesque coastal town typically slows due to fewer tourists and holidaymakers.

Running from 7 July to 28 September 2025, the 12-week initiative aims to reinvigorate spending across Tairua’s tight-knit business community. With fewer visitors in town during the colder months, the campaign is designed to encourage locals and visitors alike to shop, dine, and support the many small businesses that give Tairua its charm.

Tairua, with its scenic harbour, vibrant main street, and iconic views of Mount Paku, is home to a diverse mix of locally owned shops, cafes, galleries, and service providers. Many of these businesses are family-run and rely on strong community support to keep going outside of the busy summer season.

The Buy Local campaign offers customers the chance to win local voucher prizes for supporting those businesses. Anyone who spends $30 or more at a participating store can enter a fortnightly prize draw by writing their name and mobile number on the back of their receipt and dropping it into an in-store entry box. Vouchers valued up to $250 will be awarded in each draw, and a grand prize draw for up to $1,000 in vouchers will be held at the end of September.

“This initiative reminds people that where they choose to spend their money makes a real difference to our local economy,” said a TBA spokesperson. “It’s about giving back to the businesses that are here for us year-round and making a stronger community.”

“It is vital we think and buy local when we can, to ensure our businesses survive the winter.”

With a united community effort, Tairua’s Buy Local campaign aims not just to stimulate spending, but also to reinforce the vital role local businesses play in the community, not just employing locals but supporting through sponsorship of local community events and groups.
