Resurgent Thames Strike Late to Defeat Northern United

Report by Jonathan Coles

Resurgent Thames Strike Late to Defeat Northern United In a combative clash at Rhodes Park, Thames Men FC came from behind to defeat high-flying Northern United Humblebees 3-1, securing their third win in four matches.

For the second week running, Thames made a sluggish start, allowing Northern United to take early control. Sloppy passing gifted half-chances to Zander Bezuidenhout and Archie Tombleson, but goalkeeper Mathew Burchell stood firm, keeping the visitors at bay with his trademark safe hands.

The Thames goal was breached after 15 minutes when a floated corner found the unmarked Callum Barr, who rose highest at the back post to head home for a deserved 1-0 lead. Northern United came close to doubling their lead a few minutes later – A misjudgment let Barr in again, but Burchell was quick off his line and made a vital save.

After a rocky opening, Thames gradually settled and began creating chances of their own. Riyan Rattan picked out Michael Sogo with a searching pass, but his effort was fired straight at Finn McPherson in the Northern United goal.

Sogo threatened again moments later, turning sharply on the left before driving a low shot that forced a smart reflex save. The second half told a different story, as Thames raised their intensity and pushed forward with more purpose. Their persistence paid off when Rattan slipped a precise pass to Troy Costello, who brilliantly flicked the ball into the path of Michael Kim.

Thames’ top scorer cut inside before rifling a left-footed shot into the corner – a fine equaliser. Sensing their opponents were tiring on the soft energy-sapping surface, Thames kept up the pressure. Sogo embarked on one of his weaving runs down the left, and his low cross caused havoc. The ball eventually fell to Ben Taylor on the edge of the box, but his shot flew just over. A flurry of corners followed, and Northern United’s resistance finally broke in the 80th minute.

A spilled Sam Cox free kick dropped kindly for Xavier Brown, who reacted quickest to smash home his second of the season and put Thames in front. With time running out, Northern United committed numbers forward in search of an equaliser – leaving themselves exposed.

Thames took full advantage, and another mazy Sogo run proved decisive. The winger waltzed into the box and was clumsily brought down, leaving the referee no choice but to point to the spot.

Trusty Taylor stepped up and calmly converted the penalty, sealing a hard-fought 3-1 win.

“We came back strong from a poor first half,” said captain Keegan Apperley. “Great to capitalise on United’s tired legs and put the game to bed with some excellent goals. Let the good form continue.”
