Scott Simpson MP: Warrant Of Fitness Updates

I’m pleased that the Government is reviewing how often people need update their vehicle’s Warrant of Fitness, alongside our wider programme to modernise New Zealand’s transport rules.

It’ll come as no surprise to many Kiwis that our country requires WoF checks more than almost anywhere else in the world. That means more hassle and more costs for New Zealand motorists than is necessary.

The review outlines possible changes which include inspection frequency, inspection scope, and enforcement and public awareness measures.

In terms of how often you would need to get a Warrant of Fitness, the proposal is for new vehicles to be issued a WoF for 4 years, vehicles that are 4-10 years old would be required to be checked every 2 years, and vehicles over 10 years old would need a WoF every year.

The proposal also calls for higher penalties, either fines or demerit points, for those without a valid Warrant of Fitness. There will also be more education available for people to understand how they can better maintain their vehicles between checks.

Overall, the changes outlined in this proposal look to bring our rules in line with other countries and reduce unnecessary costs. They will make it easier and cheaper for people to keep their cars on the road, and are another way National is putting more money back in the pockets of hardworking Kiwis.

Public consultation is open until 17 December 2025 and people can have their say online through NZTA’s website. Further details about the proposals can also be found when making a submission.
