It’s a big few weeks ahead for surfing in the eastern Coromandel, with Whangamatā and Pauanui set to host a trio of major events.
This weekend, Whangamatā kicks things off with the Billabong Grom Series, bringing the country’s top young surfers to town. That’s followed by the New Zealand Club Championships in Whangamatā on 7–8 March, before the season culminates with the flagship New Zealand Women’s Surf Festival at Pauanui on 14–15 March.
Local retailers and bakeries love surf competitions — they draw huge numbers of young people, many of whom seem particularly fond of pies and coffee. Beyond the economic boost, the events bring colour, noise, and energy, with elite competitors travelling from all over the country.
Surf competitions are also great to watch. Once you understand what the four surfers are doing during a 20-minute heat, it all starts to make sense — and if you’re unsure, just ask someone nearby. The athleticism, fitness, and sheer energy on display make for compelling viewing.
