Major Waikato police operation targets organised crime, seizes drugs, firearms

A year-long police investigation into organised crime has resulted in 24 arrests, the seizure of significant quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine, multiple firearms, and almost $2 million in criminal assets.

Operation Texas, led by the National Organised Crime Group (NOCG), began in early 2025 targeting the Waikato chapter of the Comanchero Motorcycle Club and its alleged involvement in large-scale drug offending.

Detective Inspector Albie Alexander said the first arrest was made in July 2025, with the wider operation carried out in several phases between March and June this year.

During the investigation, police executed 42 search warrants across Waikato and Auckland, arresting 24 people aged between 22 and 49.

Those arrested include patched members of the Comanchero Motorcycle Club, four nominees and six associates, along with patched members of the Mongols Motorcycle Club and the Mongrel Mob.

The group faces a range of charges, including importing methamphetamine and pseudoephedrine, possession and possession for supply of methamphetamine and cocaine, money laundering, unlawful possession of firearms, and participating in an organised criminal group.

Police seized around 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine, 500 grams of cocaine and more than $100,000 in cash during the operation.

Officers also recovered several firearms, including two shotguns, four rifles and a sawn-off .22 calibre rifle.

As part of the investigation, New Zealand Customs intercepted 134 kilograms of pseudoephedrine during a border operation. Police acknowledged the support of Customs officers throughout the investigation.

Authorities have also restrained assets believed to be the proceeds of crime under the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act, including two residential properties, several motor vehicles and a motorcycle, with a combined value of approximately $1.95 million.

Detective Inspector Alexander said police estimated the drugs seized could have prevented up to $2.8 million in social harm.

“New Zealand Police will continue to target those who illegally accumulate assets and wealth through the sale of illegal drugs,” he said.

“We will take every opportunity presented to prevent harm and intimidation caused by gangs.”

Acting Waikato Crime Manager Detective Inspector Stephen Ambler praised the work of the Waikato National Organised Crime Group and district staff involved in the investigation.

“Our NOCG teams are dedicated to targeting those people that cause the most harm in our communities through the sale of illegal drugs,” Ambler said.

“We’re proud to have contributed to this outcome, significantly reducing the negative effects of drugs to our local communities.”

Police are continuing their investigation and say the 24 defendants are at various stages of the court process.

Anyone with information about the importation or distribution of illegal drugs or firearms is encouraged to contact Police through the 105 service or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
