Ground was broken on February 10 during a Pōwhiri at Morgan Park to mark the start of the building of Waihī’s new all-ages/all-abilities Pump Track.
A cycling pump track is a purpose-built circuit featuring rollers, berms, and banked turns that enable riders to generate momentum by shifting their body weight rather than pedaling.
Constructed from dirt, asphalt, or concrete, these tracks accommodate a variety of bikes, including BMX and mountain bikes, as well as skateboards and scooters.
Designed for all skill levels, pump tracks provide a safe and enjoyable environment for beginners to gain confidence while allowing experienced riders to refine their technique and flow.
The track is part of Morgan Park’s new Outdoor Recreation Hub, a community initiative spearheaded by the Waihī Community Forum in partnership with Hauraki District Council.

“It’s taken us a while to get here, so the Forum is very excited that work will start today”, says Waihī Community Forum Chairperson Bindy Burke.
“This is Stage One of the Hub, and the Forum is now focusing on securing consents and external funding for Stage 2 – a new skate park, BBQ area and Exercise area.”
Stage One of the Waihi Outdoor Recreation Hub project involves the creation of a fully accessible pump track—the first of its kind in our District. By incorporating multiple ride options and progression pathways, the pump track will encourage ongoing participation in active recreation, promoting physical and mental well-being for generations to come.

“Morgan Park’s transformation is set to make it a true recreation destination for locals and visitors alike. Beyond the obvious recreational benefits, this project has the potential to foster community connection, attract tourism, and contribute to the economic vitality of Waihī and the wider region – something we’re proud to support”, said Hauraki mayor, Toby Adams.
The Waihi Community Forum have secured funding from multiple external providers to construct this exciting new facility in the Hauraki District. We appreciate contributions from the Lotteries Commission, OceanaGold, Valder Ōhinemuri Trust, Lions Club and the Lion Foundation.
Those attending the Pōwhiri, run by local Kaumatua, Tim Ainsley, included Forum members Bhavesh Ranchhod, Anne Marie Spicer, Rangipehi Honey, Paul Anderson, Ernani De Ocampo, Mike Hayden, Donna Fisher and Paula Trubshaw, along with Forum administrator Paula Blackman, Iwi Liaison Officer Larn Wilkinson. Representatives from the Lions Club of Waihi, Waihi Beach RSA and Sport Waikato also attended
Contractors aim to complete the Pump Track by the end of April, weather permitting, and the HDC has requested no-one enter the construction site now that work is underway.
