Local boxing sensation Francis ‘The Punisher’ Waitai retained his New Zealand Super Middleweight title on April 12, delivering a commanding performance against veteran contender Adrian ‘The Terrah’ Taihia at the War Memorial Civic Centre in Thames.
The bout headlined the ‘Chaos on the Coromandel’ event, promoted by Team George Promotions, and drew a capacity crowd eager to witness Waitai’s title defence.
The fight was scheduled for eight rounds, with Waitai demonstrating superior technique and control throughout the match. Taihia, a seasoned fighter with a record of 15-5-2, showcased his experience but was ultimately outmatched by Waitai’s agility and precision.
Adding to the night’s excitement the card also featured a professional bout between Sheilla Yama and Tricia MacKenzie. ‘Chaos on the Coromandel’ continues to bolster the region’s reputation as a hub for boxing talent and enthusiastic fans.
Promoter Andrew Connaughton said he was thrilled with how the evening went:
“ We had an incredible event and are deeply grateful to everyone who purchased tables and tickets to support our fighters — with special thanks to JDN Construction for their generous backing.”
Connaughton added the night was a great opportunity to “ showcase our young amateur athletes, giving them the opportunity to demonstrate their talent and dedication in front of a supportive home crowd.”
“ For many, it meant performing in front of friends and family for the very first time — a truly special experience for these youngsters.”
The card also featured several amateur bouts, something Connaughton said was “inspiring.”
“We also loved watching members of our local community step into the ring for the corporate bouts, many of them first-time competitors, “he said.
