A Whitianga local who has raised over $30,000 for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ is urging others across the Waikato to rally behind this year’s Pink Ribbon Breakfast campaign.
Alana Baker hosted her very first Pink Ribbon Breakfast five years ago — a sold-out event for 70 guests at a Whitianga Game Fishing Club. Since then, her passion and commitment have seen the event blossom. Earlier this year, 210 women gathered for her long lunch at Salt Restaurant and Bar, raising funds and awareness for a cause close to her heart.
“For me, hosting a Pink Ribbon Breakfast is about showing support for those touched by breast cancer — not just the women diagnosed, but their families, friends and wider communities,” Alana says.
“One in nine women in New Zealand will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. By funding research, supporting early detection, and providing care, we can truly make a difference. And it all starts with getting involved.”
Alana says Pink Ribbon Breakfasts don’t have to be extravagant — just heartfelt.
“It’s about connection, compassion, and creating a space where people can share their stories, ask questions, and feel empowered. The Foundation provides everything you need, so anyone can host an event and help make change.”

Pink Ribbon Breakfast is Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s biggest annual fundraiser. It encourages Kiwis to host their own breakfast event — big or small — to raise money for vital breast cancer research, patient support services, and awareness campaigns promoting early detection.
Foundation Chief Executive Ah-Leen Rayner says community support is essential:
“As a charity with no government funding, we rely entirely on amazing supporters like Alana. Every Pink Ribbon Breakfast helps us save lives. Our mission is simple — to ensure no one in Aotearoa has to die from breast cancer.”
Pink Ribbon Breakfast Day is officially marked on 22 May, but events can be hosted anytime from March to June. All hosts receive a free kit packed with ideas and resources to help them get started.
