A Te Aroha musician is returning to the stage for the first time in years — and he’s doing it for his community.
Local songwriter James Brodie will headline a one-off 30th birthday concert, “30 AND ALIVE”, on Saturday May 23 at the Future Te Aroha Centre.
The intimate show will feature stripped-back versions of songs from across his back catalogue, alongside tracks he performed growing up on the Future Te Aroha stage — some not heard live in more than a decade. The night will also include personal stories reflecting on his journey and upbringing in the town.
Brodie said the milestone carries deep personal meaning.
“On many occasions, turning 30 came close to not happening… If you’ve spent any amount of time in my orbit, you know the levels of what I’ve had to fight over the years to get here,” he said.
“But I’ve always maintained that should I make it to 30, I would share that story on stage.”
In a move to give back, all ticket proceeds will go to the Future Te Aroha Trust, which supports performing arts and youth development in the region.
“Future Te Aroha has been a big part of my life since I started going there as a kid almost 25 years ago… if I can use this platform to give back to a place that has given so much to me, then that is a great way to spend my 30th,” he said.
The concert begins at 7.30pm, with tickets priced at $15. Pre-booking is encouraged, with limited door sales available if not sold out.
