Thames FC Battle to Earn a Point Amid Penalty Drama in Morrinsville

T&R Interior Systems Thames FC Men’s side earned a hard-fought point on Saturday, May 3rd, in a tense 1-1 draw away to Morrinsville, with three penalties and plenty of drama on show.

Heading into the match after consecutive defeats, Thames looked to bounce back against a side that had comfortably beaten them in pre-season. However, with a tactical switch to a 3-4-3 formation and the return of goalkeeper Matthew Burchell from injury, the visitors looked a different proposition.

The opening exchanges were tight, with both teams struggling to gain momentum. The breakthrough came after 20 minutes when Raegan Winslow chased down a loose ball and forced a mistake from Morrinsville goalkeeper David Mendez, earning a penalty. Ben Taylor, continuing his goal-a-game run, blasted the spot-kick into the top of the net to give Thames a 1-0 lead.

Morrinsville responded with growing attacking intent. Brendan Scott found space behind the Thames defence, but his shot was superbly saved by Burchell’s legs. As the half progressed, the game turned into a tactical midfield battle with few clear-cut chances at either end.

The tempo lifted in the second half as Morrinsville pushed forward and came close through Braian Uhalde, whose long-range shot rattled the crossbar. Shortly after, the hosts were awarded a penalty when Thames captain Mickaël Dernoncourt was adjudged to have handled the ball while attempting a header. Uhalde stepped up and converted calmly to level the scores with just over 20 minutes to play.

There was more drama to come. Thames midfielder Fernando Bassem Souilem weaved his way into the Morrinsville box before being brought down by a clumsy challenge from Satnam Singh. The referee pointed to the spot for the third time in the match, offering Thames a late chance to reclaim the lead. This time, Keegan Apperley took responsibility, but Mendez guessed correctly and made a sharp save to deny the visitors.

Thames pressed for a winner in the closing stages, with Sanket Gurung going close from a header and Sam Cox forcing Mendez into a fingertip save from a trademark free-kick in the dying seconds.

In the end, the 1-1 draw was a fair result after a match full of energy, resilience, and late drama.

“There was a collective desire to improve on a disappointing season start,” said Ben Taylor after the match. “We can be proud of our performance, and it bodes well for the remainder of the season.”
