Hamilton Wanderers Classics 6 – 2 T&R Interior Systems Thames FC
Saturday was a dismal day at the office for Thames FC, as a flurry of first-half errors shaped a 6-2 defeat against a well-organised Hamilton Wanderers side.
A sun-drenched Porritt Stadium provided the perfect backdrop for football on Saturday, but it proved to be a punishing setting for T&R Interior Systems Thames FC, who fell 6–2 to a sharp Hamilton Wanderers outfit.
Following a morning fog, conditions were near perfect for the midday kickoff. The match opened with both sides playing cautiously, creating few clear chances in the early exchanges. Thames forward Michael Kim tested Wanderers goalkeeper Jon Marden with a speculative strike, while Wanderers’ Samuel Ward threatened on the break after latching onto a long ball over the top.
Despite the even start, the momentum quickly shifted. Wanderers took the lead when Jason Forsyth confidently broke through the Thames back line and slotted home. Minutes later, a long free kick caused havoc in the Thames box and, with the visitors unable to clear their lines, the ball was eventually bundled over to double the advantage.

Thames responded with renewed energy, sparked by a turnover won by Sanket Gurung in midfield. His pass released Kim, who whipped in a teasing cross that narrowly missed Ben Taylor at the far post. Soon after, a flowing move saw Keegan Apperley win the ball, linking up with Fernando Bassem Souilem and Taylor, who found Kim in the box. Kim controlled the ball with his chest and finished well to reduce the deficit.
However, the visitors were then undone by a disastrous 10-minute stretch. Wanderers pounced on defensive lapses, with Forsyth adding another, John Shand capitalising on confusion at the back, and Brett Kennedy blasting home after a poor clearance. The hosts went into halftime with a dominant 5–1 lead.
The second half saw Wanderers easily manage their advantage, rotating their squad while Thames pushed forward in search of a response. They found some reward when Xavier Brown converted Apperley’s deep cross from close range. But any thoughts of an unlikely comeback were dashed when Forsyth completed his hat-trick with a clinical finish on the counter.
“We didn’t show enough character today; we lost the individual battles,” admitted Thames vice-captain Keegan Apperley. “It’s fair to say the better team won.”
It was a humbling defeat for Thames, who will need to regroup quickly ahead of next weekend’s home clash against Ngaruawahia United—always a fiery and hard-fought encounter at Rhodes Park.
