For Lions Clubs around the world, June marks a time of transition — a changing of the guard as clubs elect new officers ahead of the new Lions year in July. In Waihi, however, stability remains the theme, with President Duncan Smeaton stepping into his third consecutive term as club leader.
The Waihi Lions Club held its annual “Change of Officers” evening on Tuesday, but as expected, no changes were made to the executive team. Smeaton, a respected and energetic figure within the club, was reappointed without contest, reflecting the confidence members have in his leadership.
As part of the evening’s tradition, Smeaton delivered a review of the club’s activities over the past year. The club donated $43,000 to a wide range of community causes, from local rest homes and schools to regional services such as the Lions Cancer Lodge in Hamilton, Waitawheta Children’s Camp, and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. The Tahuna Hospice also received ongoing support.
Smeaton noted that not all funds were raised in a single year, but were the result of ongoing commitment and community fundraising efforts.
The club’s major sources of revenue include two biennial events — the Garden Ramble and the Community and Trade Directory — as well as the annual King’s Birthday Book Fair. The monthly Saturday Morning Market, held on the third Saturday of each month, is also a consistent fundraiser and community touchpoint.
Beyond fundraising, club members are often called on to support local events. Whether it’s helping with traffic control at the Beach Hop Warm-Up Party or lending a hand at other community gatherings, the Waihi Lions are a regular and valued presence in the town.
Smeaton also emphasised the importance of fellowship, noting that the club organises regular social events to allow members to relax and enjoy each other’s company.
As the Waihi Lions move into another year under familiar leadership, their focus remains steady: supporting the community, building connections, and working together to make a difference.
