Uber Eats has expanded its reach to Whitianga and Waihi, bringing food delivery services to the two towns for the first time. The launch means residents and visitors can now order meals and groceries via the app, adding more convenience to daily life while also supporting local businesses.
The move is part of Uber Eats’ ongoing regional expansion across New Zealand, aimed at improving accessibility for customers outside major cities while creating flexible earning opportunities for delivery partners.
The service has been underway in Thames and Northern Waikato since March.
“Uber Eats is putting online food delivery on the menu in Whitianga and Waihi, offering locals more choice and convenience, whilst giving restaurants and delivery partners new ways to thrive. Whether it’s a family-run café or your favourite pizza spot, we’re proud to support the local community and help showcase the best eats Whitianga and Waihi have to offer,” said Ed Kitchen, Managing Director of Uber Eats ANZ.
Uber’s 2024 Economic Impact Report showed the platform contributed NZ$1.5 billion to the New Zealand economy last year, including NZ$67 million linked to tourism and NZ$260 million in flexible work opportunities. Restaurants and merchants also generated an estimated $120 million in additional revenue from Uber Eats orders they would not have otherwise received.
Local business owners in Whitianga have welcomed the service. Ajay and Daisy, owners of Basker, said delivery will help them stay connected with the community, especially during quieter times. “We’re excited to team up with Uber Eats to make our customers’ favourite dishes easier to enjoy at home. It will help us reach more people on those chilly, rainy nights when eating out is less likely, and keeps us connected to our local community all year round,” they said.
Since its New Zealand launch, Uber Eats has connected more than two million people with delivery services and supported over 100,000 locals who have earned income through the platform. With Whitianga and Waihi now added to the network, more small businesses will be able to offer delivery, reach new customers, and expand their operations.
