Tairua-Pauanui Leads the Charge, But TCDC Voter Returns Sluggish

With just over two weeks until voting closes in the 2025 local elections, voter returns across the Thames–Coromandel remain low, though one community is leading the charge.

As of this week, only 13.8% of voting papers have been returned district-wide, according to TCDC’s website. But while overall participation is sluggish, Tairua–Pāuanui stands out with 20.2% turnout — well ahead of other wards. Thames (14.1%), Coromandel–Colville (13.3%), and Mercury Bay (12.8%) sit closer to the district average, while Whangamatā trails at just 11%.

Bar graph illustrating voter returns by ward in Thames-Coromandel as of September 25, 2025. Tairua-Pāuanui has the highest turnout at 20.2%, followed by Thames at 14.1%, Coromandel-Colville at 13.3%, Mercury Bay at 12.8%, and Whangamatā at 11.0%.

Historically, Thames–Coromandel has enjoyed stronger turnout than many districts across the country. In 2022, about 52% of eligible voters cast ballots here, compared to the New Zealand average of just 42% for local body elections. But with apathy toward council elections still a nationwide challenge, early figures suggest many residents may again leave it late — or not vote at all.

Election officials are urging voters to act now. Postal votes should be sent no later than Tuesday, October 7, with final hand deliveries due in a council vote box by 12 noon, Saturday, October 11.

With crucial decisions about rates, infrastructure, and community leadership on the line, the message is simple: if you don’t vote, you can’t complain.
