The long-awaited return of the Auckland–Coromandel ferry service is finally here, with Explore Group confirming sailings will resume on Friday, 24 October, just in time for Labour Weekend.
The HC Post joined Explore Group representatives, Thames-Coromandel District Council members, and local business leaders at a media event in Coromandel this week, where the company officially introduced the new service and its crew ahead of launch day.
Explore Group Managing Director William Goodfellow said the new route marks a milestone for both the company and the region.
He said the service expands Explore’s reach across the Hauraki Gulf — from Tiritiri Matangi to Waiheke and Rotoroa Island — with Coromandel being the natural next destination, backed by strong community support.
The ferry will operate express services departing Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour for Hannaford’s Wharf, with a connecting bus service to Coromandel Town. Initial sailings will include a Friday evening service and Saturday and Sunday return trips, with plans to expand based on demand. Over the summer holiday period, daily sailings are expected.
The two-hour journey offers a scenic cruise through the eastern Hauraki Gulf, showcasing the region’s islands, marine wildlife, and coastal vistas.
Goodfellow said the decision to relaunch the service was driven by overwhelming community backing and a shared belief in its long-term potential.
“It’s been the catalyst for us to make the call to reinstate the service. The encouragement from the Business Association, the Council, and locals has been phenomenal. We see this as a long-term commitment — not just a trial. We’re here to stay.”
He added that Explore Group is committed to ensuring the ferry becomes a permanent part of the region’s transport and tourism network.
Local leaders echoed the enthusiasm. TCDC Economic Development Lead Mitch King said reinstating the ferry was “an important part of the Coromandel’s hospitality offering.”
Jennifer Ashman, Chair of the Coromandel Business Association, said the move reflected “local demand from business, residents, and visitors alike, “ – adding local support had galvanised the services’ return.
Outgoing Destination Hauraki Coromandel General Manager Hadley Dryden had previously called the service’s revival “fantastic news,” adding that it would once again open up “the blue highway” for travellers seeking a relaxed alternative to traffic.
Return fares from Auckland to Coromandel Town, including the connecting bus, are $135 per adult and $67.50 per child, with an extended service to Whitianga available for $185 per adult and $92.50 per child.
