Visitors to the Coromandel can now explore the region with ease thanks to a new on-demand car hire service launched at Coromandel Shelly Beach TOP 10 Holiday Park — the first of its kind in the area.
The beachfront holiday park, located just five minutes north of Coromandel Town, has partnered with CityHop to introduce two Toyota RAV4 vehicles available for hire 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The initiative is designed to solve one of the biggest challenges for visitors — transport. Many arrive by ferry from Auckland or travel in motorhomes, which can make exploring the peninsula’s beaches, bush walks and local attractions difficult without packing up camp or relying on limited transport options.
Now, guests and nearby travellers can simply scan a QR code, upload their driver’s licence, make payment, and drive away. Rates start from $16.50 per hour, including fuel and insurance.
“It’s simple, modern, and affordable — one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to explore Coromandel,” said park management. “The response so far has been fantastic. One of our British guests even asked, ‘Why doesn’t every TOP 10 Holiday Park have this?’”
While currently a trial, Shelly Beach TOP 10 is optimistic about the service’s potential to expand across the region.
“Bringing innovative solutions like this to Shelly Beach helps make Coromandel more connected, accessible, and visitor-friendly,” the park said. “And that’s something we’re proud to be part of.”
The new CityHop partnership reflects a growing trend in sustainable and flexible tourism options — aligning perfectly with the Coromandel’s vision for a smarter, more connected visitor experienc
