Travellers warned against going to Coromandel

Thames-Coromandel District Council is asking anyone set on travelling to the region this weekend to delay their plans if possible.

Coromandel was heavily hit by this week’s storms, and several roads have been significantly damaged.

Many roads had been closed or were open only for emergency access due to being blocked by slips.

Mayor Peter Revell said having less traffic would make it easier for crews to clear slip debris and allow easier access out of Coromandel for visitors and locals who need to leave.

“If you live outside the district but have a holiday property here, please delay any plans to check on your bach this Auckland Anniversary long weekend and into next week.

“The crews working to clear roads have done an amazing job clearing debris from roads, but there is much damage to repair and multiple slips to clear.

“With windy and wet conditions in the forecast, there could easily be more slips. Travel right now in the district is risky and the crews need space and time to continue their invaluable work.”
