Passenger services on the Goldfields Railway have been suspended from April 20, with operators citing maintenance and operational requirements.
In a notice shared via the Waihi Community Info Facebook page, the railway confirmed services would be halted “until further notice”, adding that updates would be provided when available.
‘Goldfields Railway will be temporarily stopping our train trips while we perform some maintenance that can not be done while running our usual train services.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause & will do our best to be back on track as soon as possible’ read the post.
The suspension follows a period of severe weather across the Hauraki-Coromandel region, which has caused damage to infrastructure and ongoing disruption to transport networks.
The HC Post has sought clarification on the specifics behind the suspension, but has not yet received a response to messages.
A contacted source said they were “unable to comment.”
The heritage railway, which runs between Waihi and Waikino and passes through the edge of the Karangahake Gorge, is a popular attraction for both locals and visitors, offering a nostalgic journey through historic gold-mining country and scenic landscapes.
While train services are on hold, Waikino Station Café remains open.
