Thames Men FC continued their unbeaten start to the season with another composed performance at Rhodes Park on Saturday, securing a 2-0 victory to make it three consecutive wins and move above Tokoroa to the top of the league table.
Thames started brightly, applying pressure from the opening whistle. Darius King latched onto a loose ball inside the first few minutes, cutting inside before forcing a strong save from Tokoroa goalkeeper Adam Lemme. Thames looked dangerous on both flanks, with Jake Hudson also testing Lemme from distance.

It wasn’t long before the two youngsters combined for the opening goal. A long kick forward from Matthew Burchell found King, whose cross fell perfectly for Hudson to produce a clever dinked finish and give Thames a deserved 1-0 lead.
Hudson proved a constant threat throughout the afternoon. On the half-hour mark, the winger cut in from the left and unleashed a powerful 30-yard strike that rattled the crossbar. Long-range efforts from Michael Kim and Yusuke Koizumi capped off an impressive first half for the hosts, both forcing further saves.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Substitute Raegen Winslow added fresh energy to the Thames attack, troubling the Tokoroa defence with clever footwork and a low drive that earned a corner.
Koizumi once again orchestrated play from midfield, delivering a superb long pass to Eli Fale that nearly produced a second goal, only for the effort to be blocked.
Thames finally secured the crucial second goal with 15 minutes remaining. A throw-in found Keegan Apperley, who delivered a tantalising cross that Hudson bravely headed home for his second goal of the game and his eighth of the season.
“We went into the match knowing it would take a full 90-minute performance to beat league leaders Tokoroa, with a big focus on our passing, positioning and movement,” said coach Ben Taylor.
“The grit and determination the boys are showing to close games out is really paying off. Jake Hudson had another outstanding performance — he took both goals brilliantly and continues to give everything for the team.”

Final Score: Thames Men Firsts 2-0 Tokoroa AFC
Thames Women Produce Dominant Waikato Cup Win
Thames Women capped off a strong weekend for the club on Sunday with a commanding 3-0 Waikato Cup victory over Melville Epics.
The sides had met just a month earlier, when Melville edged a narrow 3-2 win, but back at Rhodes Park it was Thames who controlled proceedings.
Jessica Rendall opened the scoring after 15 minutes. Emma Hinds-Senior found the attacker just inside the opposition half, and Rendall turned sharply before surging through the defence and finishing confidently into the bottom corner with her left foot.
Minutes later, Thames doubled their advantage. Playmaker Keltie McManus collected the ball deep in midfield before curling a superb pass into the path of Ariel McNab, who threaded her way through the defence and finished clinically to make it 2-0.
McManus nearly added a third soon after when Hinds-Senior slipped a ball through, but the effort drifted just over the crossbar.

Thames continued to dominate after the break, with the defence remaining organised and restricting Melville to only half-chances. Samantha Chamberlain broke through the Melville backline with a weaving run, although her finish failed to trouble the goalkeeper. Moments later, a slick move down the right saw McManus set up Chamberlain again, but her powerful effort was saved at the near post. From the resulting corner, McNab headed narrowly over.
The third goal arrived in the 70th minute and was one of the highlights of the match. Chamberlain found McManus on the right, and a clever one-two with McNab ended with the striker finishing for her second goal of the game — capping off a superb team move.
Thames comfortably controlled the closing stages, with Louise Hinds-Haye instrumental in organising the defence, while Vita Dryden delivered another composed performance in goal.
Final Score: Thames Women FC 3-0 Melville Epics
