Bomb threat shuts down Paeroa Street

The discovery of an “item of concern” during a firearms check yesterday (March 2) led to the establishment of cordons at an address in Paeroa.

The HC Post understands residents were kept behind cordons and some prevented from returning to houses and a retirement home.

A Police media spokesperson confirmed that Waikato Police are making enquiries after an incident in Paeroa.

” At around 1.30 pm yesterday, a Police officer attended a property on Shaw Avenue on an unrelated matter.”

“Upon conducting an initial door knock, Police noticed unsecured firearms inside the property through a window. Police contacted the owner of the property and invoked the Search and Surveillance Act to enter and search the residence.

“During the search, Police located five firearms and ammunition, alongside an item of concern.

“Police contacted the New Zealand Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team.
As a precaution, the surrounding area was evacuated, and cordons were put in place. The EOD team attended and made the item safe.

“Police are speaking with the owner and occupants of the residence, ” the spokesperson added.
