Thames Music Group invites the public to an inspiring afternoon of music as the next generation of Aotearoa’s vocal talent takes centre stage at this month’s Free Friday Lunchtime Concert.
On Friday, 23 May at 12.15 pm, vocal students from the University of Waikato Conservatorium of Music will perform a rich and emotional programme at St George’s Church, Thames, accompanied by renowned pianist Frances Cowan.
Curated and introduced by acclaimed soprano and teacher Gina Sanders, the concert is titled “If Only…” and features songs and arias that reflect life’s hopes, dreams, desires, and plans. The programme includes stunning works by composers such as Schubert, Quilter, Wolf, Mahler, Mozart, Strauss, and Bernstein, performed as both solos and ensembles.
Thames Music Group has proudly hosted this annual concert for many years, showcasing outstanding young artists from the Conservatorium’s prestigious undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Many of these students are recipients of national and regional music scholarships and awards.
This year’s lineup features vocalists Emma Jones, Alexandra Buchanan, Emily Scott, Elizabeth Ellison, Lara Vautier, Wei Lyu, and Taliai Fafita. They will be accompanied by Frances Cowan, lead répétiteur and collaborative pianist at the University of Waikato.
“This is a rare opportunity to hear some of New Zealand’s most promising emerging classical singers in an intimate and beautiful setting,” said a Thames Music Group spokesperson. “The talent on display is exceptional, and the atmosphere is always warm and welcoming.”
Admission is free, but koha or donations are gratefully accepted to support Thames Music Group’s work in bringing quality live music to the community.
