Tension builds as first votes counted in Thames–Coromandel and Hauraki elections

Voting has officially closed in the 2025 Thames–Coromandel and Hauraki District Council elections, ending a hotly contested local race that will determine the leadership and direction of both districts for the next three years.

Preliminary results are expected this afternoon, with the spotlight firmly on the Thames–Coromandel mayoralty — where incumbent Len Salt faces strong challenges from Peter Revell and several other contenders. The race has been one of the most closely watched in recent years, with both leading candidates campaigning hard on infrastructure, economic growth, and council transparency.

Polling booths closed at 12pm today following several weeks of voting. As of Thursday evening, 9 October, voter turnout for Thames–Coromandel stood at 42 percent — slightly below the 2022 and 2019 figures of 45 and 45.5 percent at the same stage. Final participation is expected to increase as last-minute votes are counted.

In the Hauraki District, incumbent Mayor Toby Adams is expected to retain his position amid minimal opposition, though challenger Levi Phoenix Burton mounted a spirited campaign that resonated with some younger voters.

Results for mayoral, councillor, and community board positions across both districts — along with the outcomes of binding Māori ward polls — are expected to begin emerging later this afternoon.
